Harnessing Multiple Large Datasets to Answer Questions on Diabetes Epidemiology – International Centre for Population-Based Diabetes Research (IPoD)
Abstract
This visiting researcher fellowship will establish an international collaboration of diabetes registry studies in Denmark, Scotland, Australia and Sweden termed The International Centre for Population-based Diabetes Research (IPoD). IPoD will allow us to understand the evolving nature of trends in diabetes and its complications and will allow us to identify where we should focus our intervention efforts at a national, and at a global level. The proposal aims to establish an international collaboration between four countries: Australia, Denmark, Sweden and Scotland who have national diabetes registers or diabetes data collection systems, in order to establish a knowledge exchange system and then conduct key exemplar analyses of register data to highlight how collaborative research can be successfully undertaken. During the fellowship, we will set up the structure of the collaboration, align methods and definitions of outcomes, explore ways of secure data transfer, and take a deep dive into how data is collected in each centre. We will also set up a program of knowledge gain for diabetes facilitated by the development of training courses and an international exchange program for students, postdoctoral fellows, and Professors to travel to other centres to complete projects, internships, and fellowships. Once fully mature, IPoD will provide regular monitoring of rates of diabetes and its complications and allow us to fill many diabetes research gaps, previously not possible. IPoD will serve as the ‘legacy’ diabetes dataset for many years to come. The program we propose will showcase Danish diabetes research as the leading population-based diabetes research centre in Europe.
