Type 1 Diabetes – Advancing a Global Road Map for Improved and Integrated Care in Low-Resource Settings

International meeting and early-career researcher workshop

Type 1 diabetes, requires lifelong and carefully monitored treatment. However, low- and middle-income countries face difficulties in providing patients with optimal treatment due to their healthcare systems, limited resources, and the high costs of medical care. This international meeting and workshop will facilitate discussions on global policy efforts and explore ways to better support and manage care in low-resource settings worldwide.

The main conference days (5-6 February) will follow a one-day workshop (4 February) focused on engaging early-career researchers in type 1 diabetes. The meeting is co-organised and co-hosted in collaboration with World Diabetes Foundation, the University of Geneva Faculty of Medicine, and East African Diabetes Study Group.

This international meeting and workshop aim to support a deeper understanding of type 1 diabetes and its related challenges by facilitating the exchange of research, data, and diverse perspectives. It will focus on the epidemiology of type 1 diabetes, recent clinical and health system assessments in low-resource settings, and ongoing initiatives that manage and improve care through both country-level efforts and international partnerships.

To support this goal, the international meeting will facilitate four focused work streams that will address key areas:

  • Models of care
  • Access to insulin and associated technologies
  • Governance, financing, and sustainability
