Metabolism & Cancer – Elucidating the Connecting Links & Mechanisms

Metabolism & Cancer – Elucidating the Connecting Links & Mechanisms

Join the DDEA Speaker Tour & Networking Café with Dr. Michael Pollak in Aarhus and Copenhagen!

This summer, the DDEA is hosting a Speaker Tour with Dr. Michael Pollak, a world-leading expert in oncology and cancer prevention from McGill University, Canada.

Metabolism and cancer are deeply interconnected, with metabolic dysregulation both fueling cancer progression and being altered by the disease itself. In this tour, we will explore the intricate relationship between metabolism and cancer, uncovering the underlying mechanisms that drive tumor growth, resistance, and therapeutic vulnerabilities. By shedding light on this critical link, we aim to open new avenues for targeted interventions and improved patient outcomes.

We invite you to a day in Aarhus or Copenhagen to explore the history and latest findings on hormonal influences in cancer and to network with professionals across scientific fields and communities in Denmark and abroad.

This networking event is organised in collaboration with Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus, Aarhus University Hospital / Aarhus University, and the University of Copenhagen, University Hospital Rigshospitalet and Herlev.

We look forward to seeing you for an inspiring day of science, exchanging ideas, and exploring cutting-edge research!

Welcome to a day of science and networking with a world-leader in the field, Dr. Michael Pollak!

DDEA, Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus, Aarhus University Hospital / Aarhus University and University of Copenhagen, University Hospital Rigshospitalet and Herlev, invite you to join us to discuss the history and latest findings in hormonal influences on cancer and to network and learn from each other across scientific fields and communities.

We will deliberate potential therapeutic strategies targeting metabolic pathways including GLP1-agonism and you will gain valuable insights into how metabolic interventions may offer new avenues for cancer treatment and prevention and foster discussions on integrating metabolic research into clinical practice.

During the day, you will:

  • Learn and network with Michael Pollak, a leading expert in cancer biology and metabolism
  • Gain perspectives from scientists at the host institutions at Aarhus University Hospital and the University of Copenhagen
  • Learn about ongoing research from early-career researchers
  • Present your research in an informal poster/networking session
  • Discuss and share ideas that inspire future collaboration across fields
  • Expand your professional network

 Program overview:

5 June: We will be at Aarhus University Hospital, Palle Juul-Jensens Boulevard 11, 8200 Aarhus N, Entrance A, Room: Verdensrummet

6 June: We will be at University of Copenhagen, Mærsk Tower, Blegdamsvej 3B, 2200 Nørrebro, Room: Holst Auditorium

Bring a poster:

We encourage all interested participants to bring a poster showcasing your research from the past year.

The posters will be part of the final session of the programme, “Networking Café and Informal Poster Viewing”, where all attendees can explore the latest research across regions, disciplines, and sectors in an informal and unstructured setting. This is a great opportunity to present your work, gain new perspectives, and establish valuable professional collaborations.

If you plan to bring a poster, please confirm when registering for the event. No abstract submission is required!

Confirmed speakers:

  • Louise Lang Lehrskov, MD, Postdoc, Rigshospitalet and Herlev Hospital (DK)
  • Lykke Sylow, Associate Professor, University of Copenhagen (DK)
  • Michael Pollak, Professor, McGill University (CA)
  • Niels Jessen, Head of Research, Professor, Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus, Aarhus University Hospital / Aarhus University (DK)

Biographical sketch of Dr. Michael Pollak:
Dr. Pollak is Professor of Medicine and Oncology at McGill University. He is a clinician scientist specializing in roles of metabolism and hormones in cancer biology. Dr Pollak has published more than 525 scientific papers with a total of over 42,500 citations, and an H-index of 132, placing him in the top 10% of researchers in terms of citations and research impact. He was awarded the Harold Warwick Prize by the Canadian Cancer Society in 2012. He collaborates with leading researchers in laboratory, clinical, and population studies, and has received more than $25 million in peer-reviewed funding. He recently completed a term as Editor of the AACR journal Cancer Prevention Research and Co-Editor of the Springer-Nature journal Cancer and Metabolism, and serves on grant panels internationally. Dr. Pollak practices Medical Oncology at the Jewish General Hospital, and also leads laboratory and population-based research programs. He heads the Division of Cancer Prevention at the Department of Oncology at McGill and the Stroll Cancer Prevention Centre at the Jewish General Hospital. His research focuses on the intersection of oncology, endocrinology, and metabolism and he employs a multidisciplinary approach, using both laboratory and population methods.

Organisers:
This event is jointly organised by Danish Diabetes and Endocrine Academy in collaboration with the scientific organising committee consisting of:
