Bridging Endocrinology with Metabolism – Glucocorticoid Physiology and Pharmacology

Glucocorticoid hormones (GC) exert metabolic and insulin-antagonistic effects, and GC derivatives are used as anti-inflammatory agents by 3 % of the population. There is an unmet need to expand and share scientific data on GC physiology and pharmacology between medical specialities and scientific disciplines. We aim to support education and networking in the GC field by using the DDEA to manage a PhD and postdoc course, which will facilitate knowledge exchange and interdisciplinarity. 

This PhD course consists of a 1.5 day course (Wednesday and Thursday morning) and a 1.5 days symposium (Thursday afternoon and Friday morning). If you sign up for the PhD course, you are automatically signed up for the Circadian Rhythms and Metabolic Stress Symposium as well.

The course / symposium will cover different topics including:

  • The clinical epidemiology of:
    • Glucocorticoid treatment
    • Cushing syndrome (endogenous GC excess)
    • Addison disease (endogenous GC insuffciency)
  • Glucocorticoid physiology:
    • Substrate metabolism and insulin sensitivity
    • Circadian rhythms and clock genes
    • Tissue regulation of GC function (11β-HSDs)
    • Anti-inflammatory actions
  • Glucocorticoid pharmacology:
    • GC treatment in rheumatology
    • GC treatment in Sports Medicine
    • Adverse effects of GC treatment

This course is intended for PhD students and postdocs with an interest in GC physiology and pharmacology. This includes participants involved in clinical and translational research in diabetes and endocrinology, in addition to PhD students and postdocs involved in GC research from other fields such as rheumatology, oncology and pulmonology.

The participants are selected based on abstract submission.

Dinner registration
Networking Dinner 15 & 16 March
The DDEA organizes a Networking Dinner both 15 and 16 March. Please sign up for the dinner when you register for the event.

Accommodation
The DDA offers accommodation from 14-17 March in Aarhus to participants living outside of Aarhus area. Please, state if you need accommodation when you register.

Certification
A course certificate will be sent to all participants upon request at the end of the course. Full participation is required to attain 2.2 ECTS points.

No-show fee
Please note that it is free of charge to participate in the course howeverthe DDA will charge a no-show fee of 500 DKK if you do not show up and have not unregistered from the course prior to its start.
