Objectives and Structure

The international meeting entitled ‘Type 1 diabetes – advancing a global road map for improved and integrated care in low-resource settings will seek to address and achieve the following:

  • Discuss existing research, data and perspectives of the epidemiology of type 1 diabetes and the ongoing efforts through various work-streams to compile information from across low-resource settings (and beyond) in order to establish a better understanding of the magnitude and projections of the burden from type 1 diabetes. The wider domain of type 1 diabetes pathogenesis and etiology may also be included as may also aspects related to health records and patient registries.
  • Discuss outcomes from recent clinical and health system research and assessments concerning type 1 diabetes diagnosis and treatment in low-resource settings with emphasis on both the actual patient/cohort monitoring and on capacity building efforts and their viability in terms of building sustainable, equitable and accessible treatment services, recalling the need for stable supplies of insulin and blood glucose measuring devices alongside adequately trained health care professionals with required guidelines at hand.

The meeting and workshop will consist of a combination of keynote presentations, panel debates, break-out sessions, side events, and other formats aiming to establish a high-end and engaging technical dialogue and interactive forum. The goal is to bring stakeholders closer together in terms of aligning support and interventions, capacity building and research, advocacy and policy process interactions, and expanding collaboration at the country level. The two main meeting and workshop days (February 5-6) will be preceded and followed by a one-day workshop (February 4 and February 7, respectively).
